December 10 2012 – Laura Wright

 Hi everyone!

A few weeks ago, there was an article published in the Quincy Herald-Whig about yours truly!  Not all of the interview made it into the write up… soooooooooo… if you’re interested, here’s the rest of the conversation with Sandi Terford:

Describe a typical day…  as a small business owner, I never have a typical day!  I usually bounce around from project to project.  Some of these include: filling internet orders, boxing cards, drawing new products or custom pieces, meeting with clients, constructing wreaths, crawling around on the floor, painting canvas, and covering things with glitter!  One thing is almost always certain… if you see me around town, I’m usually covered in paint, glitter or both!

Do you have a work ethic or motto?  Hmmm… not really?!  However, I work really hard and so far it’s paying off!

Who/what is your inspiration?  Everything and anything is my inspiration!  From the moment I wake up in the morning, anything is fare game.  Sometimes a conversation sparks an idea, sometimes it’s my mood, a hobby, a color, a great book or an old friend… most of the time i don’t get around to creating every thing i think of, so i keep a running list.  It get’s longer by the day!

On days that I have a job to complete and can’t find the right idea, my mom is always there to the rescue!  She is great for inspiration!

How did you get interested in this type of work?  I have been doodling for as long as i can remember!  My school notebooks were always covered in scribbled stars, squiggly lines and little characters.  As a child I made elaborate construction paper greeting cards and invitations for family and friends.  However, I never even considered this as a profession, until mid 2010.  I had moved home to Quincy from the West Coast, was planning on attending law school and found myself completely broke (and a little lost)!  It was only at this time that I started to review my options.  I remembered my love for drawing and decided to embark on this adventure.  It’s amazing the great things that can come from being at the bottom!  Actually, one of my cards was inspired by this: the exterior is a little man at the bottom of a hill looking upward, the inside reads, “when you’re at the bottom, there’s nowhere to go… but up!”  This card is part of the CARE PACK greeting card set.

How do you unwind?  After a hard day, I like to roam the aisles of Home Depot.  I can’t get enough of that place!  I usually pick up all sorts of odds and ends and repurpose them for my many projects.

I also love to oil paint!  I have a tiny little studio where I could spend hours working.  Painting is very therapeutic… it is a great way to get your emotions out, onto a canvas and then leave them there to dry!

What would people be surprised to know about you?  People may be surprised to know that I have had no formal training in art… and I didn’t even start oil painting until after I graduated from college!

Other than your work, do you have any hobbies or passions?  Many!  I love to cook, eat, read, ride my bike, listen to jazz music, visit art museums, search for cool new fonts, snow ski, travel and spend time with my family and friends!

Finish this sentence: it’s a good day when…  people give me the opportunity to design custom products for them.  I love meeting new people and helping them make their ideas a reality, Whether it’s designing wedding invitations, custom stationery, stickers, business cards (or just about anything else), it is a blast to get to know my clients, listen to their concepts and make products that match their personalities, events or businesses!
